A recent, but still very incomplete cataloging of definitions of social media by <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.metaroll.com\/2008\/11\/14\/what-is-social-media-a-not-so-critical-review-of-concepts-and-definitions\/\" title=\"Benedict Koehler\">Benedikt Koehler<\/a> numbered 23 distinct definitions. These range from virtual synonyms of social software, to those that make no reference to software at all.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"3\">In its modern context \u201csocial media\u201d is associated with tools that support social interaction and provide (to quote a definition offered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.briansolis.com\/2007\/02\/whats-wrong-with-social-media.html\" title=\"Brian Solis\">Brian Solis<\/a>) \u201cfor the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. It is the shift from a broadcast mechanism to a many-to-many model, rooted in conversations between authors, people, and peers.\u201d Part of this definition associates social media with the use of social software including Web 2.0 software to generate media content and intense social interactions. Later on, I\u2019ll use this definition for my discussion, while making no claims that it\u2019s even close to representing a consensus among social media practitioners, since no such consensus exists.<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><strong><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"3\">Enterprise 2.0<\/font><\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 150%\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\"><font size=\"3\">The person most closely associated with the Enterprise 2.0 meme is Andrew McAfee.
